You’ve sent out your resume to numerous companies and applied to endless amounts of job openings. But, for some reason, you just can’t seem to secure an interview (or even get a response). Your resume is probably getting lost in the sea of resumes that recruiters receive each and every day. Have no fear – TriMech Services is here to inform you about how to make yourself stand out on paper!

Include Important Keywords

Many companies screen resumes for certain keywords before even reading them. Avoid the “no” pile by including these types of words on your resume. To find relevant verbiage, read carefully over the job posting, review LinkedIn profiles with similar job titles, and explore the company’s website.

Include Concrete Numbers

In the job experiences section, focus on the specific accomplishments you achieved in previous roles, not simply the details of your responsibilities. Employers like to see concrete numbers that emphasize what you did in previous positions. (For example, “Boosted website traffic by 65%”.) Detailed metrics show that you know exactly what you accomplished in your previous roles and exactly what you can add at the company you’re applying to.

Tailor Your Resume to the Job

Although tempting at times, resumes really aren’t a “one-size-fits-all” sort of document. One of the best ways that you can make yourself stand out in the vast sea of resumes is by personalizing your resume to the specific job you are applying to. Only include information and experiences with skills that relate directly to the job you are applying for. That being said, it’s wise to create a “master resume” that includes details of every job experience you’ve ever had – this will make the process of creating a tailored resume much quicker.

Keep It Professional & Free of Errors

One of the biggest deterrents for recruiters is seeing a resume full of grammatical errors. Be sure that your resume is also formatted in a professional manner. There shouldn’t be an excess of white space around your information – in the same grain, it shouldn’t be so busy on the page that it’s confusing to read. Don’t include visuals in your resume. Some creative companies appreciate the innovation; however, most organizations like to see the traditional resume. Also, make sure that your resume has a uniform font and font size throughout (with the exception of your name and contact info – those can stand out). Keep it a simple and professional font, such as Times New Roman or Arial. Spellcheck and proofread – TWICE.

You may have seen these tips and tricks before, and are now thinking, “I do all those things and I still don’t have a job”. Here are a couple more tips that will make you really stand out from others.

Always Include a Cover Letter

Oftentimes, companies do not require you to provide a cover letter along with your resume – especially in many online application formats. If you truly want to stand out from other potential candidates, however, a cover letter is essentially mandatory. A cover letter gives employers the chance to get to know you more personally than your resume allows. Cover letters provide you with an opportunity to tell employers why you’re the best candidate for the position and showcase your passion for this position/company.

Send Resume/Cover Letter to Hiring Manager – Dig for Info

Don’t just settle for sending a cover letter along with your resume. Dig for deeper, more personal information about the company. A company’s LinkedIn profile usually has a list of employees with links to their LinkedIn profiles. Search through this information until you find the hiring manager (or someone closely related in the organization). Send your resume and cover letter directly to the hiring manager’s email address – this will show your dedication to getting an interview and has a higher chance of getting recognized. Better yet, print your resume and cover letter out and send it to the hiring manager the old-fashioned snail mail way – this is sure to make you stand out!
