5 Tips for Building Your Personal Brand

Establishing a personal brand is important for several reasons. For example, your brand  lets people know who you are and what you stand for. It is your way of identifying and differentiating yourself from others in the business world. With this in mind, how you build your personal brand is crucial; therefore, we have compiled a short list of tips to help you establish a strong brand.

1. Be Yourself

As always, you want to put your best foot forward; however, you should still be true to who you are when establishing your personal brand. Your brand should reflect your beliefs, strengths and weaknesses, and experiences. These differentiations will help people connect with you and feel like they are getting the real side of you and not just a cookie cutter image you are wanting to portray.

2. Develop a Speaking Voice

One of the easiest ways to develop a voice is through social media platforms where people are free to speak their mind. Media outlets such as blogs, tweets, or Facebook posts can help you develop a strong speaking voice. Develop blogs containing current information or things that you are passionate about. Speak up and engage in conversations and topics you are knowledgeable about.

Keep in mind that everything you post on social media contributes to your personal brand; therefore, be purposeful when posting things online. Make sure what you are posting is consistent to your brand and will accurately reflect your beliefs.  People will associate you with the things you post online so think carefully before posting a funny video with crude language or a controversial image. Every post should include some key point or fact you want others to walk away with and remember, so make it count!

4. Connect with Other Brands

Connections with other brands is what gives your personal brand credibility. People are more likely to trust stronger and more well-known brands, so find organizations and people that can elevate your own personal brand. Start with past companies you have worked for, universities or schools you have attended, and fellow colleagues or administrators. Become familiar with these brands and learn how you can contribute. Using brands that already have a strong presence will help you get your name and personal brand recognized.

5. Personalize Your Platform

Once you have a well-established personal brand, it is important to share “your story.” In other words, what brought you to where you are today? Create an honest and open narrative that shares your passions and goals with others and lets them know what you hope to achieve. Your narrative is what will make your brand different from the rest.  Your brand should have a clear and consistent goal that should always be evolving just as you grow through experiences.
